Beating out a field of nearly 25,000 entrants, Bangkok’s Scruffy Murphys has been short-listed for four Irish Pubs Global Awards for its excellence in entertainment, sport, whiskey and management.

The distinctive red-fronted Irish pub in the heart of Thailand’s capital was nominated for Best Sports Experience, Best Whiskey Experience, Best Entertainment Venue and Best Bar Person – General Manager Eoin O’Ceallaigh – for Irish Pubs Global’s Asia, Africa, Middle-East & Pacific region. The winners will be announced at an Oct. 9 ceremony at the Galmont Hotel in Galway, Ireland.

Scruffy Murphy’s on Sukhumvit Soi 23 is the latest chapter in the history of a brand that dates back to 2001 in Phuket. Scruffy Murphy’s has now established itself as Bangkok’s premier Irish pub and is the only one in the Thailand’s capital to be nominated for the prestigious global awards.

“We’re very honoured to be short-listed for this award. It wouldn’t have been possible without the great support from the Irish community here in Bangkok, plus all the hard work by our dedicated team to make us No. 1,” said O’Ceallaigh. “Go raibh maith agat!”

Irish Pubs Global recognised Scruffy Murphy’s for its reputation as the best place for sports, entertainment, whiskey and staff in a region spanning three continents.

The Best Entertainment Venue award honours pubs that provide the best entertainment experience for customers, including traditional Irish music, local talent and Irish acts. It also is the centre for events and celebrations including the Bloomsday Festival, Galway Oyster Festival, Taste of Ireland Week and, of course, the biggest day of the year, St Patrick’s Day.

The Best Sports Experience award recognizes pubs that showcase Irish sport at its best with a regular schedule and range of sporting events including GAA, rugby and football. Scruffy’s also catered last year’s Asian Gaelic Games in Bangkok.

The Best Whiskey Experience prize goes to the pub demonstrating the best Irish whiskey has to offer, with a wide range of Irish whiskey offerings, food pairings and product knowledge.

Scruffy Murphy’s features the largest selection of whiskey in Bangkok, from the popular classics Jameson and Tullamore Dew to boutique brands like Teelings, Pogues and the West Cork series. The bar also stocks many selected single-malt and small-batch distilleries from home.

Finally, the Best Bar Person award recognizes the manager or owner who best demonstrates the understanding and level of service expected of a leading bar person amongst his and her peers, showing responsibility and leadership skills while also being a reliable team player.

The Londoner Opening June 1… And Selling Booze

Published

The Londoner Opening June 1

So it seems that not only will The Londoner be open on June 1st having been shut since late March but you will also be able to buy booze too.

Technically you have to take the alcohol off-site – which means they can do takeaway booze 100% – but the way things are worded on their updates it sounds like there will be an area set up where you can sit and have a drink.

As you’d expect, it is all very vague but reading between the lines, and looking at their promo posters, they plan to be selling sauce, and I’m not talking HP here.

Social distancing regulations will be in play, so no large groups and face masks are requested of all customers who want to sit 2 to a table and shout across the pub to their mates about the EPL restarting or to ask if they are ordering the buy 1 get 1 free on Londoner Brewed Beers (IPA, Pilsner + Low Carb Pilsner).

The Penalty Spot Will Be Back

The Penalty Spot

I shared a photo earlier today on social media of The Penalty Spot on Sukhumvit Road asking was the bar another COVID casualty as it had a sign posted with a name and number giving the impression the shophouse it stands in was available for rent.

Just to clear up any confusion as to whether The Penalty Spot will reopen or not I can confirm the bar will be back as soon as the government gives the green light.

It’s just a simple case of no booze, no point.

I totally get that, so now that’s been cleared up I’m off to have a cold one.
