Patpong Mardi Gras 2020

Published on 17th February 2020 by Stickboy BKK

For the first time in almost 30 years, the Patpong Mardi Gras makes a comeback this month that will see Soi 2 as you’ve never seen it before.

In a bid to give the area a push, several bar owners have got together to revive the once-popular weekend street fair in Bangkok’s oldest nightlife area.

Throughout the 1980s the annual Patpong Mardi Gras, which was organised by the Rotary Club and the bar owners, ran every March with a street fair of food, entertainment and the crowning of Miss Patpong.

It all began in 1981 with the entry fee and proceeds from the street stalls donated to Thai charities. The annual event ended in the early nineties when the decision was made to close Patpong Soi 1 every evening for the now world-famous night market.

Other than cheap beer, I’m not sure what the organisers of the 2020 event have up their sleeve and note with interest that a fair number of venues have not signed up to take part.
