Rainbow Rumours

Published

on

Rumours are rife right now surrounding the future of the Rainbow bars in Nana Plaza with a variety of stories circulating about their imminent demise.

Some are saying all four Rainbow bars are finished while other gossip merchants claim it is only Rainbow 1 and 3 that have quit the naughty nightlife business.

Those “in the know” say the bars have been emptied and dancers apparently telling friends they will need to find a new job when Nana reopens.

My understanding is the owner of R1 & 3 did say they were quitting but that is as far as the threat has gone. They still have the keys and have not walked away.

Rainbow 1 has called Nana Plaza home since moving from its original location on Sukhumvit Road close to Soi 16 back in 1982 and is the oldest go-go bar operating in The World’s Largest Adult Playground. Only Lucky Lukes beer bar can claim to have been around longer.

After 38 years would the owner just hand the keys back and walk away from not one but two bars?

Keep in mind Rainbow 1 and 3 are run by different family members who own Rainbow 2 and 5 (or whatever number they are using this month) so one bar pulling the plug doesn’t mean all 4 are ready to call it quits.

Is It The End For SuperStar?

Published

on

SuperStar is a nightlife institution that’s been entertaining the bad boys of Bangkok and beyond for the past four decades but times have been tough for the old school Patpong bars in recent years and the Covid-19 situation has been the final nail in the coffin for a fair few businesses as their ageing owners decide enough is enough and settle for retirement.

The owner of Cosmos around the corner made the decision enough was enough and called it a day last week when they decided not to continue when the government finally allow bars to reopen becoming yet another nightlife coronavirus casualty.

I recall a couple of years back being offered a six-figure “commission” if I could find someone to buy SuperStar and the neighbouring beer bar owned by Taan but any interested parties halted talks as soon as the lease length of 1-year rolling was mentioned.

Serious buyers want more than a 1-year rolling lease otherwise there’s no point investing hence no SuperStar sale which comes back to what next for the owner?

Reopen whenever that might be, wait on a trickle of tourists and hope someone snaps up the bar for a couple of million to stick in the retirement fund or just pull the plug and not fritter away any more money in what must be a black hole?

Tough decisions to be made for not just this bar owner but many around town who are in the same boat.
