Purya Rokhneh: My Life As A Boxer
“Survival was tough, but giving up wasn’t an option.”
As an accomplished fighter and coach on the Bangkok boxing scene, I faced many problems and challenges on the journey to success. With more than 120 fights in my career, I have trained Olympic athletes, Thailand’s greatest champions, and people from all walks of life.
There were many challenges along the way, starting in Iran and emigrating to Thailand without speaking English. Survival was tough, but giving up wasn’t an option.
How I Got Into Boxing
When I was a child, boxing wasn’t a popular activity. At 4, my older brothers took me to the boxing gym. Due to my young age, standing and watching them pursue their training inspired me to follow in their footsteps. At home, we were obsessed with boxing. We mostly spoke about sports. As I was growing up, I watched all of the fights on TV. Knowing every detail about the matches.
Following my 9th birthday, the national championship of Iran took place. I weighed a mere 28 Kilograms, and victory was mine against the other boxer. Ever since boxing has become the life path, I’ve chosen to pursue.
By all means, the above motives inspired and motivated me to become a professional boxer. I kept boxing until my career started to thrive in Iran. Later, I became an international fighter, fighting in China and Thailand.
Moving To Thailand
Initially, I didn’t plan on staying in Thailand. My friend invited me to come to help him prepare for a fight. And one thing after another, I ended up living here.
Without being able to speak or understand English, the first two years were difficult. I was only earning 5,000 Thai Baht a month. 3,000 was going to rent, and the rest was for food.
My passion for boxing kept me motivated.
I attended every English class. I didn’t miss a single 3-hour-session. In the gym, I met people from all around the world. Communicating with them alongside language classes helped me to become fluent.
Becoming Thailand’s Greatest Champions Coach
After a few years of fighting Muay Thai, I was hospitalized for injuring my knee. This made me stop practising Muay Thai to focus on western boxing.
Boxing coaching took a significant part of my life; I started training students of all categories, levels, and ages. It isn’t about physical age, but their mental image of themselves. The older trainees are just as good as my younger students.
At first, I go easy with new trainees, showing them what they’re physically capable of. Then, once they become mentally and physically prepared, I start adding different skills to their boxing program.
Many of the children, whom I started coaching at a young age, became Olympian, Asian and International medalists.
On a weekly basis, I have the pleasure of coaching western boxing in Bangkok to ONE Championship fighters, Thailand’s greatest champions (Buakaw and Superbon), and people who are new to boxing.
Passing on my knowledge to others provides a high level of motivation. I train students in the gym for 10 hours daily without feeling tired. Every time they learn a new technique, they’re eager to improve their execution. It’s so rewarding, and it makes me happy.
To this day, I keep fighting and coaching. My group sessions are 500 Thai Baht per person, and private sessions are 1,500 Baht. I adapt to each one of my student’s goals either by getting more fit, learning a new sport, or becoming a better fighter.
