The parents of a 12-year-old boy who died behind the wheel after hitting a wall are facing charges for allowing him to drive the family pickup.
The fatal crash happened in the early hours of New Year’s day in the Wang Saphung district of Loei Province, after the youngster lost control of the vehicle on a hill, overturning and smashing into a wall.
Local media report he was seriously injured in the crash and had to cut him free from the wreckage by rescue services. He died a short time later.
A family member told reporters the boy had been driving for 3 or 4 years having learned to drive at a young age and was able to drive an assortment of vehicles, including a 6-wheel truck.
If found guilty his parents face a fine of 2,000 baht for allowing their son behind the wheel without a driving license and a further fine of 30,000 baht and/or three months jail time under the Child Protection Act for encouraging children to behave inappropriately.
