After the big news over the weekend that hundreds of illegal street racers had been rounded up and a couple of hundred bikes seized, the first batch to face prosecution were all set free yesterday on a technicality – all 127 of them.
On Tuesday, Thon Buri district court ordered the release from police custody 127 illegal street racers after the public prosecutors failed to file formal charges with the court within 48 hours of their arrest.
Police asked the court to detain them for further six days until June 7, claiming they needed more time to prepare the cases.
The court rejected the police request on the grounds that all the 127 bikers had pleaded guilty and, according to the law, they must be formally charged within 48 hours.
As a result of the ruling, all 127 street racers got off scot-free.
What looked like a job well done ended up being a complete waste of time and money due to incompetence on the part of the persecutors.
