Algerian Pickpockets Busted For BTS Thefts

Two Algerian pickpockets have been arrested following a spate of thefts on the Skytrain network over the past three years.

Immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang told reporters at a press conference two 55-year-old men, identified only as Omar and Mohammed, were in custody and awaiting deportation.

Omar was apprehended after he was identified by an American tourist who had his wallet stolen by the pickpocket and a female accomplice.

A BTS security guard recognised him from a circular and alerted police.

During questioning, Omar named a fellow countryman as another member of the gang leading police to arrest Mr Mohammed at a residence in Ramkhamhaeng.

He too confessed to targeting tourists on the BTS from as far back as 2016 and overstaying his visa.

Both men were remanded pending immigration preparing paperwork to send the pair packing.
