Another Jumbo Goes Nuts Injuring 2 Italians

It’s been a banner week for berserk elephants, with two Italians and a mahout hurt when a jumbo went on a rampage in Phangnga.

Three days after an irritable elephant exacted deadly revenge on its unarmed mahout in Sukhothai, Thanwa, a 9-year-old bull, threw three men off its back and gored one of them, Francesco Di Megu, 32.

Fellow Italian Trofa Manuel, 30, suffered a broken leg and mahout Kanchanapong Karnwichit also was hurt at the Bangkaew Adventure park in Muang District’s Song Phraek.

All three were transported to a local hospital and the Italians are said to be in stable condition.

Kanchanapong told police the pachyderm started to shake off its passengers about 50 meters into a trek. The keeper tried to control the jumbo but to no avail. After Thanwa tossed the tourists he gored Di Megu with a tusk.

Police found an unfinished beer can nearby, prompting speculation the smell sent Thanwa into a fit. Kanchanapong was charged with recklessness causing serious injuries, although what he did recklessly was unclear.
