An American man is in police custody following the death of an Australian he was invoked in a fight with on Friday evening at a bar in Pattaya.

Fabulous 103 report Melbourne man Benjamin Robb had grabbed a bar girl in Ruby Cub on Soi 6 by the throat causing a stir with a group of Americans, one of whom attacked the Australian.

Witnesses said the two men were drunk when the fight broke out that left Robb bleeding and unconscious after having his head repeatedly stomped on by 42-year-old Jose Manuel Polanco.

Emergency services were called and the injured Aussie was rushed to Pattaya Memorial Hospital where he died several hours later.

The American attacker is said to have handed himself into police and has been remanded pending a court appearance in the coming weeks on a murder charge.

UPDATED: Thai media are reporting Monday afternoon that Polanco has been charged with assault causing death, a charge that he denies, and one that comes with a 3-15 year stretch behind bars if found guilty.
