Bangkok Bar Facing Five Year Closure Following Raid

A popular Bangkok bar is facing a five year closure order after it was found to be operating illegally and serving minors following a raid in the early hours of Wednesday.

Around 100 officials from various government agencies including the Juvenile Observation and Protection Department, Excise Department and Office of the Narcotics Control Board together with police officers from Bang Bon district raided the Ben Pub on Ekachai Road.

Inside the bar over 100 customers were found partying and once the lights went up and the music turned off drug tests and ID checks were carried out.

Twenty-nine partygoers were found to be under 20 with 15 of them testing positive for drugs.

Two ecstasy pills, several packets of powdered ketamine and five bottles of liquid ketamine were found by officials discarded on the floor.

Those who tested positive for drugs were sent to the Social Development and Human Security Ministry where their parents would be called to collect them.

The operator of the Ben Pub, Banchob Permpoon, 34, was charged with operating without a licence, selling alcohol beyond legal hours and serving minors.

The bar now faces a five year closing order under new legislation introduced last year by the government in a bid to tackle illegal bars and clubs.
