Bangkok Cabbie Fined For Threatening S. Korean Celeb With Beatdown Over Meter

A Bangkok taxi driver has been fined 2,000 baht for threatening South Korean celebrity stylist Kim Woori with a beating during an argument over the cabbie not using the meter.

Kim experienced what thousands of other Thais, expats and tourists experience every day: A taxi driver who tried to rip him off.

A television host and fashion stylist for K-Pop stars and other celebs, Kim got in a pink cab and, only after getting underway, discovered the driver wasn’t using the meter. When he objected, the driver told him the fare would be 200 baht.

The two argued. Speeding Somchai decided to drive in circles and haggled the fare down to 150.

When Kim refused again, the driver pulled over and told Kim to get out on the side of a busy road. Then then brandished a wooden stick to get his point across.

This might work on the average Korean, but Kim has 167,000 followers on Istagram and whipped out his phone and caught the mad cabbie in the act.

As expected, the post went viral, Department of Land Transport officials were horrified at the damage the clip did to Thailand’s honest and wholesome reputation and the driver was dragged in for an apology.

He was fined 1,000 baht for not taking Kim to his destination and 1,000 baht for being rude. No mention of the baton or the meter was made.
