Bangkok Electric Use Hits Record As Heatwave Persists

Step outside and that sound you hear is everyone using their air conditioners at once, and the country’s main power provider laughing all the way to the bank.

Bangkok’s electricity consumption hit a new record Saturday night, with 29,680.3 megawatts sucked up, most of that to aircon units.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand said it has plenty more juice in the tank and will be happy to sell it to you as scorching temperatures are projected to continue.

The previous record was set on May 11, 2016 at 10:28 p.m. with 29,619 MW burned through.

Bangkok’s core temperatures have averaged 32 degrees Celsius this week, but felt much higher when considering humidity percentages in the 50s.

The hot weather has continued today with temps around Thailand reaching up to 44 degrees. Bangkok should top out at only 41 C.

The highest temperature recorded in Thailand in 2019 was 44.2 degrees in Lampang on April 18.
