Bangkok has finally knocked London off the top spot as the World’s Most Visited City according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index shared by Forbes.
The Thai capital became the first Asian city to top the list having been sitting at number 2 behind the British capital for several years but it was a very close call looking at the figures.
Bangkok had 15.98 million international visitors who generated an estimated $14.4 billion in revenue with London not far behind on 15.96 million visitors. On the money front London was ahead by almost $2 billion with an estimated $16.3 billion generated by tourists.
Just exactly what part of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s “Discover Thainess” campaign played in Bangkok reaching the top spot isn’t clear but I’m sure lots of back slapping and smiles at TAT HQ will be the order of the day.
