Bangkok’s Air About To Prove It’s Still Possible To Get Worse

Some people will ask how, but Bangkok’s air is about to get worse.

Smog in and around Bangkok will increase Feb. 13-15 due to a high-pressure cell over the central region, the Meteorological Department reported Saturday. The smog will be thick with those ever-so-popular “PM 2.5” particles.

On the plus side, it might be a touch cooler, the weather people said.

Department chief Phuwiang Prakammin claimed the air has been cleaner of late due to more wind and clear skies, causing particulate matter measuring 2.5 microns or less to blow town.

Police claimed they’ve been doing their part to get the smoke belchers off the street, impounding more than 8,000 vehicles from Feb. 1-4.
Now only 400 a day are still blowing black smoke, the cops said, spraining elbows while patting themselves on the back.

Upcountry its hazy as hell, as farmers burn off their sugarcane or maize plantations in Khon Kaen, Nan and Uttradit. But they’re also doing it in Chon Buri, giving Pattaya expats another thing to moan about.

Farmer said they realize the practice is bad for the environment, but, heck it is cheaper and easier to set a match to the whole thing than actually get out and clear it themselves.
