Bizarre Smoking Restrictions Now In Place On Silom Road And Victory Monument

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has announced six no-smoking zones around the capital that include some bizarre restrictions on Silom Road and around Victory Monument.

Bangkok governor Thaweesak Lertprapan told reporters on Wednesday the new restrictions come into effect immediately and would be strictly enforced.

The six new smoke-free zones are Bangkok Bus Terminal in Chatuchak, Don Mueang airport, Silom Road, Victory Monument, Taling Chan Floating Market and Chatuchak Market 2 in Minburi district.

“The floating market and Chatuchak Market 2 are now totally smoke-free, while smoking in the other four areas will be limited to designated smoking areas,” said Mr Thaweesak.

He added, “On Silom Road and Victory Monument cigarette smoking is now prohibited within a 3-metre-radius of bus stops”.

Offenders caught flouting the smoking ban face a maximum fine of 5,000 baht.
