Students And Elderly Take Their Chances On Bangkok Overpass Wrecked In Road Accident
Young students and elderly locals are risking their lives on a badly damaged and dangerous pedestrian overpass in Bangkok damaged by a minivan on Monday evening with calls for authorities to close it due to safety concerns.
The overpass, close by the Samae Dam Market in Bang Khun Thian district, was left badly damaged after an accident involving a minivan at around 4pm on Monday evening, however, district officials have failed to fence off the bridge to stop the public from using it until repairs were carried out.
Young kids heading to school Tuesday and Wednesday morning had to take their chances using the wrecked stairway on the overpass as it seemed safer than trying to dodge eight lanes of traffic to reach their school on the opposite side of the road.
Locals are also concerned the overpass may collapse and are calling for local authorities to close and repair it asap.
Update & Correction – The overpass has now been closed to the public by local authorities after being hit by a minivan, not a truck as originally reported.
