BMA Tells Speeding Somchais To Get Off Sidewalks

Next time you’re nearly run down by Speeding Somchai on the sidewalk, call the cops: This time they might actually care.

Bangkok city hall said Thursday that it has ordered its army of donut-munching, cigarette-butt-picking tessakit officers to start actually ticketing drivers of cars parking and motorbikes driving on the sidewalks. One assumes that cars driving on the footpaths also might get a citation.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said it decided to have its pseudo-cops do more than target tourists for spitting and dropping butts after lots of tax-paying Thais complained about motorcycle taxis, lost Food Panda delivery boys and mailmen taking the footpath freeway.

Bangkok Deputy Gov. Sakonthee Patthiyakul said 115 sidewalks are being targeted with officers able to write tickets costing 500 to a whopping 5,000 baht. The most-common pedestrian slalom courses were in the Huey Khwang, Chatuchak and Rama IV areas.

Sakonthee said strict enforcement of the common-sense traffic laws could eventually change drivers’ habits, but admitted most would have to be caught two or three times before the light bulb went on.

By that time, of course, the “crackdown” will have faded into memory. Even the deputy governor admitted that previous efforts failed miserably because the tessakit spent more time hiding from the sun than actually walking the beat.
