Busking Schoolkids Save Life Of Suicidal Fan

The schoolkids busking under the King Taksin bridge knew something was wrong when a Chinese man gave them a 7,000-baht tip. It turned out they were right: The distraught fan was getting rid of all his worldly belongings before a jump to his death.

The real-life spirit-of-the-holiday-story unfolded Monday night on the banks of the Chao Phraya River as nine youths from Wat Sutthiwararam School played tunes to raise money for a school talent contest.

Among those who came to toss coins and green bills into the tip jar was a thirtysomething Chinese man who tipped them 1,000 yuan, or about 4,750 baht. The kids were grateful and appreciative, but when the same man circled around again and donated another 500 baht, they suspected something was amiss.

The group followed the man under the pretense of returning an overly generous donation. He responded by giving them his mobile phone, saying he no longer needed it because his father and grandfather had died.

That’s when the students knew their benefactor was planning to jump. And they weren’t going to let that happen.

The nine youths encircled the despondent man, consoling him in the limited Chinese and English they knew to stop him from committing suicide. Passersby saw what was happening and several other Chinese speakers joined the conversation until Chinatown police arrived to whisk him to safety.

The students garnered much-deserved praise online for their hours-long effort. One suspects their school talent show will have all the money it needs now.
