Commuter Chaos

Downtown Bangkok grind to a halt this evening as a section of Rama 1 Road was closed and the BTS delayed due to a suspicious package found outside Police HQ.

Initially thought to be a bomb, the box with a flashing green light, turned out to contain no explosives despite having questionable contents inside, according to EOD officers who were called in to inspect the device.

Chaos commenced around 5.30pm when the box was found and Rama 1 Road closed, sections of the skywalk around Siam BTS station shutdown and trains delayed as bomb squad officers set to work.

After around an hour, a spokesman from police HQ told reporters the package wasn’t a bomb but did contain elements to suggest otherwise with emphasis put on it not containing any explosives.

He said the suspect who planted it likely intended to cause chaos.

Rama 1 Road reopened just before 7pm and Skytrain services put back on track around the same time.
