Brit Accused Of Robbery Caught On Camera

A British man was arrested early Monday morning after he was identified as the person who robbed and drugged a fellow countryman in his hotel room last week.

The alleged thief, identified as 67-year-old John Lane, was apprehended just after 1am Monday at the junction of Sukhumvit Road and Soi 4 after a warrant was issued for his arrest following a complaint filed last week by Brit Michael Travers.

Lane, who has lived in Chonburi for 40 years, was questioned at Lumpini Police Station over the theft of 440,000 baht worth of cash and valuables from Mr Travers.

It is alleged Lane tied his victim up once inside the room and forced the 69-year-old to reveal the pin number of his bank card before forcing him to drink a substance that knocked him unconscious.

When Mr Travers woke several hours later at around 3.40am he found a watch worth 200,000 baht and 19 other items missing.

He reported the incident to hotel staff who contacted police.

Once officers checked CCTV footage from the hotel lobby and the corridor leading to the victims room they were able to identify the thief and apply for an arrest warrant.

Despite being shown CCTV footage of him following the victim from the lobby of the hotel into the lift and then forcing his way into the room of his victim, Lane denied the charges.

Police told reporters they believe Lane is behind several similar robberies of elderly Brits at hotels in the area.
