Around The World Cyclist Killed Near Korat

A cyclist on a round the world trip was killed and his wife and two-year-old son injured on Saturday afternoon after a pickup crashed into them on Mittraphap Road near Korat.

Francisco Villa, from Chile, had set off on his world recording breaking bike trip in 2010 with the target of cycling 250,000Km over 5 years. His dream came to a tragic end on the deadly roads of Thailand.

It was reported that his Singaporean wife has a broken leg and their son Lucas suffered only minor injures in the accident that left the pickup on its roof.

Police stated the driver of the pickup driver, Tiwarat Ratchaipidet, 64, will be charged with negligent driving.

Francisco Villa isn’t the first round the world cyclist to be killed on Thai roads during a global adventure. In 2013, British couple Peter Root and Mary Thompson were killed in a road accident with a pickup in Chachoengsao Province after 19 months on he road.

The road death toll in Thailand is the among highest in the world, ranking between 2 and 4 for traffic-related death depending on the source. Up to 26,000 people are killed in road accidents every year in Thailand.
