express boat passenger drowns

A 50-year-old man drowned this morning after he slipped and fell into Saen Saep Canal in Bangkok as he stepped off an Express Boat.

Theerapong Silasit fell into the water at around 6.15am as he was disembarking the boat as it slowed for passengers at the Sukhumvit Soi 15 pier.

CCTV footage of the incident shows the boat slowing down at the pier and before it could come to a complete stop Mr Theerapong tried to jump on to the pier and fell into the water.

Rescue volunteers from the Por Tek Tung Foundation recovered his body several hours later around 10 meters from the pier.

Later police spoke with the boat operator, the driver and ticket collector and reported by Thai news the deceased was told to wait but went ahead and attempted to jump off the boat before its driver could maneuver it close to the pier.

Lifesavers were thrown into the water in the hope Mr Theerapong would surface but he’d suffered injuries to his arm and shoulder that likely restricted his mobility in the choppy water.

The body was sent to the Police Hospital for an autopsy.
