A Thailand women’s World Muay Thai Organization champion died of an apparent suicide in her Ratchaburi dormitory.

The body of Nitiyaporn Srisalai, 22, was found hanging from a door frame around 11:30 p.m. Monday. The chair she used to climb up was found kicked over nearby.

Roi Et-native Nitiyaporn was a fourth-year Muay Thai student at Muban Chombueng Rajabhat University in Ratchaburi. She was the title holder for the World Muay Thai Organization’s 51-kilogramme female division.

Police said the young boxer had been drinking Sunday night with a friend who lived next door. On Monday morning, she knocked on Nitiyaporn’s door and got no answer and left, writing it off to a hangover or her being out.

That night she knocked again and, when again there was no answer, she contacted help to get a spare key.

Police only offered unsubstantiated speculation as to the motive.

Charnchai Yomadit, president of the International Muay Thai Study Association, called Nitiyaporn’s death was a tragic loss for Thai boxing.
He said she always appeared to be happy, having worked since childhood to build her career after her parents’ divorce.
