An off-duty policeman is under arrest and facing a murder charge after he shot and killed a Frenchman following a drunken brawl early Wednesday morning in downtown Bangkok.

41-year-old Malik Ait Kaki was shot in the head and chest on the first floor of the Trendy Building located on Sukhumvit Soi 13 just before 8am.

He died at the scene.

Pol Sgt Maj Kantapong Huadsri of Lumpini police station fled the scene but soon surrendered and confessed to the killing.

A friend of the victim told police a fight had broken out at Lucky Shot bar on Sukhumvit Soi 11/1 when Kantapong and the Frenchman became involved in an argument than turned into a fist fight.

Kantapong lost the fight and together with a barman followed Malik to the Trendy Building where he was living and shot him dead.

Kantapong is being detained pending a court appearance and further legal proceedings.

The family of the victim and the French Embassy have been notified.
