A geriatric German wanted for stabbing his teenage Thai bride in 2010 was captured hiding out Chiang Rai.

Heinz Jurgen Theil, 74, skipped out on 400,000 baht bail nine years ago after he – then 65 – allegedly stabbed 17-year-old Janjira Janthapool 20 times at their home in Chiang Rai’s Mae Chan District.

The crusty Kraut had been in Thailand for 20 years and was a widower and father of a teenage girl of his own when he met and fell in lust with his daughter’s pal Janjira, who was just 14 at the time.

He then got her disabled father to agree to let him marry the girl and move both of them into his rental house.

But their three years together was not marital bliss, with the girl and grandfather fighting frequently. On April 4, 2010, a particularly vehement quarrel turned to violence, with Theil allegedly stabbing her head to foot.

He then told his daughter and the bereaved father to take him to Mae Chan police where he turned himself in. But the German had a change of heart once he was charged with murder and, rather than end his days in a Thai prison, he skipped out and went into hiding, but apparently not far from the scene of the crime.

He was picked up at a health clinic in downtown Chiang Rai. The 74-year-old can take solace in that his life sentence won’t last that long.
