German TV Show Apologies Over Royal Wedding Skit

Producers of a German television show has bowed to the howls of Thai keyboard warriors outraged over a skit lampooning last week’s wedding of HM King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida.

SAT.1 Frühstücksfernsehen posted on its Facebook page that it didn’t mean to demean all Thai culture when it lampooned the hasty marriage before the weekend’s coronation of His Majesty, who spends most of his time at his German estate.

Reactions online ran the gamut from Thais who called for all Germans to be banned from Thailand to sanctions against the German embassy.

A few cool-headed Thais told the royalist ranters to take a chill pill and learn to take a joke.

“A precious culture yet so sensitive to mockery?” the page Rubnong Thailand wrote. “To people losing their shit right now: don’t let me see you mock the North Korean leader later.”

It’s doubtful most of those complaining understand German – with many probably never having seen the clip – but it was the gestures the two hosts made, not so much their words, that got under Thais’ thin skins.

Of course, any slight against the mockery is subject to years in prison under Thailand’s draconian lese majeste law. So that’s all I’m going to say on the matter.
