Gunman Opens Fire On Songthaew Carrying Tourists In Pattaya

Pattaya police are hunting for a group of men in a black pickup who opened fire on a songthaew carrying Italian tourists in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers were called to Sukhumvit Road just after 5am and found the 28-year-old songthaew driver and his girlfriend consoling two very frightened and upset Italians who were still in shock but unharmed followed the incident.

The driver told police he’d been hired by the Italians to take them to Jomtien beach and while traveling along the main road a black pickup appeared driving erratically.

After sitting on his tail for a short time he said it pulled out to overtake which is when he heard a loud thud that led him to believe something had been thrown at his vehicle so he retaliated by launching a water bottle at the pickup, however, his effort missed.

The songthaew driver told investigators the pickup then changed lanes and opened fire, letting off 4 or 5 shots with one hitting the rear tyre, sending the terrified Italians to the floor as they ducked for cover.

He attempted to flee but without success due to the blown out tyre. The pickup carried on a little further down the road where it made a u-turn to head back towards Pattaya.

Local media report police have gathered evidence from the scene and are checking CCTV in a bid to identify the gunmen.

Police said the incident harms Pattaya’s tourism image as the gunmen didn’t care about foreigners on the bus.
