The Commander of the Tourist Police division Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakphan and his entourage went for a walk along Soi Cowboy last night as part of a police campaign to clamp down on illegal practices and crimes against visitors to Thailand.

Mr Surachet was followed by a large press pack as he strolled along the neon alley shaking hands and chatting with tourists. Not a single selfie was taken with any sexpats who all most likely ran for cover inside a bar when they seen the cameras coming.

The safety initiative by police is intended to strengthen tourist confidence in and around well-known attractions across Thailand as well as places where violence against tourists has been reported.

The problems being addressed include tourists be ripped off through substandard tours, products, services and the presence of drug rings, criminal gangs and mafia in popular tourist areas.

The Tourist Police Commander didn’t pop into any of the bars to ask about bill-padding, overpriced lady drinks or the substandard services some of the go-go girls provide to their clients back at the short time hotels.

Perhaps he just didn’t have time as he was in and out of Cowboy in less than 30 minutes which included a 10 minute speech at a podium on Asoke for reporters.
