A 65-year-old man found living rough on the streets of Bangkok by a member of the public is now in the care of his family after being contacted by the British Embassy.

Robert Clark Penna of Kimberley, Nottingham, was spotted sleeping in an old shack by Wanlop Duangcharoen who contacted Lumpini police to assist as he couldn’t speak English.

Officers took Mr Penna to the station where a translator was brought in to get to the bottom of why he’d overstayed his visa and living rough.

Once his identity was established officers asked the British Embassy to assist. They contacted his daughter who booked a flight to Thailand to take care of her father.

Interestingly, Mr Penna worked as a solicitor in England where he was accused of systematic and substantial mortgage fraud over a period from 1991 to 1997.

His name also appears in the Panama Papers that show him residing at Top View Tower Condominium on Soi Sukhumvit 59.

Just how he came to be living as he was remains a mystery with commenters on Facebook suggesting he was left penniless by a Thai woman.
