Jellyfish Kills Young German Woman Swimming Off Koh Samui

A 20-year-old German tourist died on Tuesday night and another hospitalised after being stung by box jellyfish at Lamai beach on Koh Samui.

The unnamed woman went swimming around 8pm and soon became entangled in the long poisonous tentacles of a box jellyfish. Her German friend, identified as Jiovana Rassi, went to her rescue and suffered jellyfish stings too.

The pair were found on the beach screaming in pain by the owners of the bunglaow they were renting in the Mared area of the island.

Despite receiving first aid by rescue workers, the young woman died a short time later with her friend istill undergoing treatment for her injuries at Bangkok Samui Hospital.

Authorities have issued warnings to tourists about the dangers from jellyfish stings while swimming off the island at this time of year.
