Bootleg Moonshine Raid

If your Johnnie Red or Black doesn’t taste quite like you remember, you might have gotten some of the knockoff pseudo-Scotch being cooked up in Hat Yai.

Excise Department officials raided a house where they caught bootleggers Amornrat Jaimongkol, 20, and Srirat Jaichanalert, 40, in the act, pouring bogus booze into glass bottles bearing the Johnnie Walker label. They also found the remains of burned counterfeit revenue stamps in the back.

Sritat said she was just the hired help and had no idea who her boss was. She said it was distilled elsewhere and just shipped to them to bottle, stamp, package and deliver to a drop-off point.

Police claimed the kingpin is a foreigner. Because, you know, a Thai would never do this.

What exactly was going into the do-it-yourself brew is unknown, but it undoubtedly made real Red and Black taste like Blue, which is an accomplishment in itself. For starters, it contained food colouring to make it look real.

In all about 12 litres of the moonshine was found in jugs and another 13 bottles. Who knows how much previously got shipped out to go-go and beer bars in Bangkok, Hat Yai and around the South.
