KBank Breaks Thailand’s eBanking System On Payday

People logging into their online banking Friday morning to see if they actually got paid got a rude surprise instead as Thailand’s entire electronic-banking system crashed.

Despite speculation, hackers were not responsible for the spectacular fail that brought down ATMs and e-banking services at Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Krungthai, Krungsri and Thanachart banks, among others.

In fact, blame KBank for taking down the entire system – and pointing out how stupid it is to have all the banks connected to the same switching system.

Bank of Thailand Assistant Gov. Ronadol Numnonda didn’t name names, saying only a “big bank” had a huge backlog of interbank transfer requests and pushed them all through at once, clogging the system.

The Thai Bankers Association wasn’t as diplomatic, blaming Kasikornbank by name. KBank finally fessed up on its Facebook page, saying parts of its system broke down and customers were unable to make some transactions, especially inter-bank ones.

It finally unplugged from the switching system and everyone else came back up. KBank said it may spend a few days looking into what went wrong.

Full service was restored by the afternoon. So if you’re paycheck isn’t there, don’t blame the bank.
