Khaosan street Hawkers Get Extra 2 Hours

Swept off the pavements, street vendors on Khaosan Road got an extra two hours to do business when the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said they could open as of 4 p.m. daily.

As part of the BMA’s crackdown, vendors were told they couldn’t come out to play until 6 p.m. Phra Nakhon District Chief Pongsathorn Siritham said Thursday that the extra two hours was agreed on at a meeting with sellers, residents, bureaucrats and police. Final approval will take about a month.

Just more than 400 metres of Khao San between Chakrapong Road to Tanao Road are designated as a market zone, with half designated for food. Temporary parking is available for the sellers at each end of the strip.

Hawkers without a physical storefront in the Khao San area can get a 2.5-sq.-metre parcel to do business. Currently, 234 peddlers are registered to sell there.
