Killer Octopuses Invade Thai Waters

If the killer jellyfish weren’t bad enough, now people are finding killer octopuses.

A fisherman in Rayong pulled a blue-ringed octopus up in his net Friday. Fortunately, Somchai the Sailor Man knew the creatures were deadly and warned other anglers not to eat them if they were caught.

Despite its small size, blue-ringed octopuses carry enough venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. Their bites are tiny and often painless, meaning many victims don’t realize they’ve been poisoned until they drop dead of respiratory arrest.

The octopus gets its name from the bright blue rings that appear across its body when threatened.
