Leader Of Tourist-Targeting Pickpocket Gang Arrested

Ratchaburi police arrested the accused leader of a pickpocketing gang that targeted tourists at popular floating marketing and temple fairs.

Patchara Banjongchob, 46, was taken into custody May 19 while hocking her stolen goods at Charoen Tham Temple Fair in Saraburi Province. Four others in the gang of 12 previously were arrested.

Police said Patchara – just released from prison in March where she was serving her third stretch for theft – quickly went back to work,

renting a van to carry her gang of thieves to spots like the Amphawa Floating Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market where they’d work in teams to steal 100,000 baht a day.

The sophisticated operation used gang members to surround targets, blocking any view by witnesses and quickly passing wallets, phones and other valuables between members.

Spots with large numbers of foreign and Thai tourists were their most-frequent workplaces, including Rangsit Market, Chinatown, Platinum Fashion Mall and more.
