Moroccan Jailed For Pilfering Purses In Chiang Mai

A Moroccan man has been arrested for pilfering people’s purses and backpacks in Chiang Mai.

Hassan Idrissi Mounadi, 53, was taken into custody Monday following two days of investigation into two separate thefts.

On Dec. 1, security cameras captured Mounadi walking in carrying nothing, but walking our one minute later with a black backpack owned by an Italian identified as Tumiati, 24. He said he was eating at a KFC restaurant when the pack came up missing.

Inside were 500 euros, 8,000 baht, two credit cards and his ID. Police said Mounadi took the cash, tossed the bag and went to a foreign-exchange booth just 200 meters away to change the euros into baht.

That night, Mounadi was seen again on CCTV at a coffee shop on Moon Muang Road. Again he entered with nothing and came out with a purse that Pusada, 35, had left on the floor. She told police the bag contained 3,000 baht and her phone.

Mounadi pocketed the cash and threw the phone and bag near the Tha Phae Gate.

The Moroccan had been a busy boy. When he was captured police confiscated 18,200 baht from his room.
