NBTC Makes Fingerprinting Mandatory For SIM Purchases

The secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission told a press conference on Thursday that fingerprinting would be mandatory for all new SIM purchases from January 1st 2018.

Mr Takorn said of the 30 fingerprint ID machines being issued on 31st May, twenty-five will be installed in three southern provinces: Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

“From January 1 all mobile users must participate in the system if they want access to mobile network service,” he said. If they fail to comply, their mobile signal would be cut off.

In total, 30,000 machines will be operational by the year end with all post and pre-paid SIM customers having to submit their fingerprints that will be stored on a secure NBTC server.
