NBTC Targets Online Porn

Enjoy PornHub, torrents and your online poker gambling now, because Thailand’s telecom regulators are coming after you.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has asked the U.S. embassy to help it block 786 encrypted websites offering torrents, pornography, illegal video-streaming, music and software downloads it says violates the kingdom’s intellectual property laws.

The sites also make it harder for street vendors to sell their copy DVDs, copies of Windows and MP3 collections.

A newly established Center of Operational Policing for Thailand Against Intellectual Property Violations and Crimes on the Internet Suppression (Coptics) is vowing to block online pirates within three days. Problem is, they’re too technically ignorant to do it.

So Coptics reached out to the U.S. for help in blocking the HTTPS sites and those hidden behind content-distribution networks. No word if America wants to play ball.

Thai officials said they had received complaints indicating that 1,080 URLs violate Thailand’s IP laws, including those used by Android boxes to stream English football matches to bored Nakhon Nowhere expats.

Of the 1,080, Thai button-pushers could only block 89 themselves.
