One man died, another is missing and countless homes were damaged when the first tropical storm to hit Thailand in three decades hit southern provinces Friday.

Six fishermen who ignored warnings to stay ashore amid Tropical Storm Pabuk ended up in the sea off Pattani Province with one dying, another lost and four others rescued. All boats in 10 southern provinces have been told to remain in port for another day.

Pabuk – “drunk” in Thai – was downgraded Saturday morning to a tropical depression, but still is packing dangerous winds and dumping torrential rain across the isthmus. Phuket will feel the brunt of the remaining storm today after Koh Samui took a pounding last night.

Bangkok Airways, which has a stranglehold on Samui’s airport, resumed and added more flights today after cancelling all planes Friday. Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat airports also have reopened. Ferry services to most islands also are running again.

Red flags also are up at beaches across the regions with save of up to five meters reported. Damaging storm surge was reported as far away as Koh Chang.

More than 28,000 people were evacuated from the Pabuk’s path in seven provinces, including Phuket’s Racha islands and most tourists on the Phi Phi Islands.

Widespread flooding, fallen trees and ripped-off roofs were commonplace, with local authorities and the military providing assistance. The Royal Thai Navy earlier this week dispatched two large ships, medical units, engineers and heavy equipment to the south in anticipation of widespread damage and distress.
