Pickpocket Gang Rob Nine Tourists At Chiang Mai Lantern Parade

A gang of pickpockets in Chiang Mai stole cash and mobile phones worth more than 100,000 baht from nine tourists on Tuesday night as they watched the annual Yi Peng Festival.

The city police station was looking like the United Nations as tourists from the USA, South Korea, China and Japan all took seats to file robbery reports.

The duty officer Pol Maj Thanongsak Chanchuakaew told reporters several tourists had spotted a group of three or four men standing close by but their attention was on the lantern parade and not the men. It wasn’t until later they realised their valuables were missing.

The Chiang Mai police chief said cheap hotels used by known thieves would be checked and that there was a safety campaign running throughout the popular Loy Krathong celebrations in the city.
