A Prayer Before Dawn Author Banged Up For Burglary

The author of the book A Prayer Before Dawn that’s been turned into a movie telling the true story of an Englishman banged up in a Thai prison has been jailed this week in his homeland for burglary.

Billy Moore, 45, is back behind bars and set to miss the American release of his movie in April after being sentenced to two years, five months for breaking into his neighbours home three times in one day, stealing items including booze and jewellery.

During sentencing the court heard Moore has previous convictions for burglary and drug offences.

His lawyer said he’d fallen back into his old ways and was back on drugs after being diagnosed with cancer.

Despite Moore pleading guilty to three counts of burglary, his lawyer laying on the “he’s a reformed character” line, and letters from the movie producer and his “broken hearted” mum, the judge sent him down as he was classed as a repeat offender.

Billy Moore traveled to Thailand to escape a life of drug addiction and alcoholism. He managed to overcome his inner demons for a time but relapsed after trying yaba – a highly-addictive form of methamphetamine.

Moore’s life quickly descended into chaos, drug dealing and violence until he was eventually arrested and imprisoned in Klong Prem, a place where life has no value.

A Prayer Before Dawn is no ordinary prison memoir; it’s the story of one man’s struggle to survive in one of the world’s toughest prisons. It’s also a story of redemption in the most unlikely of places.
