A British tourist has dodged paying a substantial hospital bill for treatment she recieved after kicking up a fuss online when she had her passport confiscated for non-payment.
Louise Troy, 36, who is three months pregnant, was admitted to Bandon International Clinic last Friday on Koh Phangan when she started bleeding from her uterus, suffering dizziness and taking fainting fits after partying at one of the islands Full Moon Party events.
On Saturday she was transferred to a Bandon facility on Koh Samui for further treatment and discharged the same day with a clean bill of health.
It was at this point she was presented with an invoice for 103,319 baht as her travel insurance was void as she is pregnant. She told hospital administrators she didn’t have the cash and offered only 20,000 baht even after they had sliced 50% off her bill.
Due to her inability to pay, her passport was kept by the hospital as a guarantee and she was allegedly threatened with legal action, according to online reports.
Her friends went to the tourist police in a bid to resolve the situation as Ms Troy was due to fly back to the UK on Sunday 11th December.
The story then made its way on to the popular Drama Addict Facebook page after reporters from Workpoint News became involved.
According to Thai news reports, at this point the President of the Bandon International Clinic offered to return both the passport and 20,000 baht to bring the matter to a close.
