A 31-year-old Russian man who’d overstayed his visa by 7 years had his lunch interrupted on Wednesday by immigration police who were carrying out spot checks on foreigners around Koh Samui.
Alexey Safronenkov’s luck ran out when officers from Surat Thani immigration discovered he’d been in Thailand 2,861 days beyond his permission to stay.
The Russian entered the country via the Khuan Don checkpoint in Satun on January 12th 2012 on a tourist visa which allowed him to stay until February 11th 2012. He failed to renew or extend his visa, deciding to chance his luck on overstay.
Following an appearance in court, Safronenkov will be transferred to the immigration Detention Center in Bangkok before being deported and blacklisted for 10 years.
