The alleged mastermind behind the killing of a former Phuket coyote dancer and her childhood friend is in custody today, captured in Cambodia on his way to Vietnam.
Bar owner Panya “Sia Auan Bangla” Yingang was picked up by Cambodian police late Wednesday in eastern Prey Veng province trying to escape over the border to the communist country.
Panya, a violent and influential Phuket bar owner, is the last of six suspects to be nabbed for the July 29 murders of 20-year-old Paveena Namuangrak and Anantachai Jaritrum, 21, at the foot of the Khao Chee Chan “Buddha Mountain” in Sattahip.
Panya’s bodyguard Kritsana Srisuk and alleged gunman Narong Warintarawej, both 22, were jailed Aug. 6 and 7, respectively. Driver Kiattisak Surangsangboonmee, 35, scout Jirasak Unaiban, 34, and spotter Sayan Srisuk, 43, re-enacted their roles in the murders in the days after the killing.
Thai police were expected to hold a news conference later today and fly Panya back to Bangkok shortly.
The two youths were walking back to their car when Panya and Narong allegedly confronted them. Police say Narong shot the young woman four times – twice in the head – and Panya shot Anatachai twice in the head.
Police say Panya was infatuated with the young woman who began working as a go-go dancer in his Phuket bar when she was just 16, but refused his advances. He killed Anantachai because he believed him to be her boyfriend, police say.
