Smoking Ban On Beaches Kicks In On Feb 1

In an effort to keep popular beaches around the country clean, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources has banned smoking on 24 beaches in 15 provinces from February 1st.

Anyone found flouting the new law faces a 100,000 baht fine and/or one year in the slammer.

Smoking zones have been set up at all 24 beaches earmarked for the ban to allow sun worshipers who want a ciggy by the sea.

The 24 beaches in 15 provinces are as follows:

– Ban Chuen beach in Trat province;
– Laem Sadej beach in Chanthaburi province;
– Saeng Chan beach in Rayong province;
– Bang Saen, Tham Phang, Sai Kaew, Dongtan and Pattaya beaches in Chonburi province;
– Cha-am beach in Petchaburi province;
– Hua Hin and Khao Takiab beaches in Prachuab Khiri Khan province;
– Sairi beach in Chumphon province;
– Bophut beach at Koh Samui island; Chalok Baan Kao beach, Koh Tao island, Surat Thani province;
– Plai Sai beach in Nakhon Si Thammarat province;
– Chalathat beach in Songkhla province;
– Wasukri Beach beach in border Pattani province;
– Patong beach in Phuket;
– Koh Khai Nok and Koh Khai Nai beaches in Phang-nga province;
– Kaw Kwang, Klong Dao, and Phra Ae beaches in Krabi province
– Chao Samran beach in Trang province.
