Roughnecks looking for natural gas in the sea off southern Thailand found something else completely unexpected: A dog.

Vitisak Payalaw, an offshore planner for Chevron Thailand Exploration & Production, said workers spotted the pooch paddling toward the platform, stunned to see it swimming 220 kilometres offshore.

The dog made its way to the platform base and put its paws up, trying to hold on, yet never barking or whimpering. The seas growing choppy, workers scrambled to devise a way to rescues the canine swimmer.

Payalaw and three coworkers spent 15 minutes securing the dog with a rope and pulling it to safety.

Exhausted, but unhurt, the soggy doggy got some much needed fresh water and meat before taking a well-deserved kip in a makeshift kennel inside.

The Thai and foreign workers named the lucky dog “Boonrod”, which translates to “he who has earned good karma, which helps him to survive”.

No one really knows how Boonrod ended up 135 nautical miles from land, but speculation is that he fell off a fishing boat.

Boonrod was sent back to shore and is being cared for by Watchdog Thailand, which supplied a bath, food and medical attention. The pooch is said to be in good health.

Payalaw said he’s stuck offshore for another month, but, if still unclaimed when he returns, he plans to adopt Boonrod.
