Suspended Sentence For Australian In Tragic Jet Ski Accident

Suspended Sentence For Australian Jet Ski Death

A young Australian man was given a two year suspended sentence and fined 5,000 baht today at Phuket Provincial Court for killing his girlfriend in a jet ski accident last month.

Thomas Keating, 22, was found guilty of reckless driving causing death of his girlfriend Emily Jayne Collie at the beginning of February in what was described by the judge as a “terrible accident” and a “tragedy”.

Mr Keating and 20-year-old Emily collided at high speed off Kata Beach leaving the young woman with severe injuries to her neck and back. She died a short time later.

In a statement to police in February, Mr Keating said he was blinded by strong sunlight reflecting off the water and this led to the collision as he couldn’t see Miss Collie.

A court official said the young Australian could leave Thailand in around a week once the paperwork was processed and filed.
