Swede Selling Chewing Tobacco Charged With Working Illegally

A 60-year-old Swedish man was arrested on Friday by Pattaya police for selling chewing tobacco over the internet illegally.

Stig Lennart Vahlberg was apprehended in a sting operation organised by local police following a tip-off from an informant the Swede was selling his untaxed chewing tobacco via a messaging app.

The foreign informant ordered 60 cans of chewing tobacco and arranged to pick up the goods at Pratamnak Soi 6, with the boys in brown sitting on the sidelines ready to make their move once the transaction took place.

Once in custody Vahlberg couldn’t produce his passport and was taken to the Chonburi Immigration Office where it was eventually determined he was on a retirement visa with permission to stay until early 2018.

He was then charged with working illegally in Thailand and remanded pending further legal proceedings.

Many readers have commented on social media the product is NOT chewing tobacco, rather snus – a moist powder tobacco product originating from a variant of dry snuff in early 18th-century Sweden. It is placed under the upper lip for extended periods.

Police informed reporters it was chewing tobacco hence me describing it as such.

Bottomline, he was selling an untaxed product illegally without a work permit.
