Thai Airports Close Smoking Lounges

Those jonesing for a cigarette after their 14-hour flight to Bangkok will have to wait a bit longer to light up after Bangkok’s six major airports closed their smoking lounges today.

Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Mae Fah Luang airports are now entirely no-smoking zones, said acting Airports of Thailand President Sutheerawat Suwanwat.

Stubbing out the puffers paradises took effect with enforcement of new amendments to the 2017 Tobacco Control Act and a 2018 Public Health Ministry announcement that extends no-smoking zones in and around government agencies and state enterprises.

Those caught lighting up within five meters of prohibited spaces face fines of up to 5,000 baht.

AoT has, however, moved to set up new smoking areas outside the passenger terminals that comply with the new regulations.
