Thailand Bans Plastic Waste Imports

Thailand has banned the import of plastic waste because, well, it produces enough of its own.

The Industrial Works Department announced the ban in the Government Gazette Tuesday, saying all licenses for plastic scrap importers have been revoked. Hopefully those companies have some other garbage to import.

The government said it made the move to protect the kingdom’s environment. After all, Thailand already is one of the five biggest dumpers of plastic in the world’s oceans.

Plastic waste imports have been allowed since 2008 to support the recycling industry. But recyclers used legal loopholes to import contaminated plastic and other hazardous materials, so the government has shut them down entirely.
